This is my all-time favorite book. There is something fascinating about this story. It's spooky, intriguing and definitely not your average English literature. It's about an independent and headstrong girl who goes to work as a governess in a lonely old estate owned by Mr. Rochester. There are several movies of Jane Eyre, including one this year. My favorite is the A&E version from 1997.
2. Rebecca
I am a fan of mystery and suspense. I could not put this book down. Yes, it is an old book as well, but it's much more modern than some of my other picks. The movie is good too. It's a romantic story about two people who fall in love quickly and the second Mrs. de Winter is haunted by the memory of Maxim's first wife.
3. Persuasion
This is my favorite Jane Austen book (yes, I do love Pride & Prejudice as well). But, I relate to this story the most. Anne's former love has reappeared in her life. Does he still love her? Is it too late? The suspense is too much! My favorite version of this movie is from 1995. You may recognize the lead actor from my favorite Jane Eyre film. Coincidence?
4. Lake of Dead Languages
Carol Goodman is my favorite modern author. Her earliest books are my favorite, but I still read every new one. This is by far her best work. It's a mystery of course, set at an all girl boarding school. This book almost made me want to learn Latin, almost...
5. Girl with a Pearl Earring
I went through a phase were all I read and watched had to do with English literature, royalty and history. I love that the author took a painting and made a whole story from it. Genius. Also, good movie.
